The Most Beautiful Museum Wedding Venues in Germany and Europe
A wedding ceremony surrounded by masterpieces of art, an elegant dinner in a historic museum gallery or a celebration within striking contemporary architecture: museums offer extraordinary possibilities for couples dreaming of a wedding inspired by art.
But which museums actually allow weddings? Across Germany and Europe, numerous museums and cultural institutions open their doors to private celebrations. Some offer civil or symbolic ceremonies directly within their galleries, while others provide magnificent spaces for wedding dinners or sculpture gardens for an outdoor ceremony.
The possibilities vary considerably. While some museums can accommodate an entire wedding celebration, others are suitable exclusively for a ceremony or reception.
As a wedding planner specialising in art-inspired weddings in museums, I have explored extraordinary cultural venues throughout Europe. In this guide, I introduce museums and art destinations that offer opportunities for weddings, explain what makes each location special and share important considerations for planning your celebration.
One of the most common questions when planning a museum wedding is whether the venue can be reserved exclusively for the wedding party. In reality, a complete museum buyout is relatively uncommon. Often, only selected event spaces, galleries or outdoor areas can be hired, while the museum continues to welcome its regular visitors. Some museums allow private events during their normal opening hours, provided the event spaces can be separated from the public galleries. Others only permit weddings after closing time or on days when the museum is normally closed.
Wedding ceremonies held directly among the artworks are often only possible outside public opening hours. However, exclusive use of an entire museum is not always necessary to create a private and extraordinary wedding experience. What matters most is understanding which areas are available and how the celebration can be integrated into the museum's operations.
Not every possibility a museum offers for weddings is listed on its website. Many cultural institutions publish information about general venue hire without specifically advertising weddings. Whether a symbolic ceremony can take place inside an exhibition gallery, a drinks reception can be hosted in a courtyard or several museum spaces can be combined for a celebration often only becomes clear through a personal enquiry.
Several factors influence what is possible, including the exhibition schedule, regular opening hours, guest numbers, conservation requirements and the museum's operational arrangements. Special restrictions may also apply to floral design, catering, photography and event installations.
Museums operate very differently from traditional wedding venues, both organisationally and in terms of their requirements. As a wedding planner and cultural manager, I understand the particular considerations involved in hosting private events within cultural institutions. For me, a museum wedding is about much more than finding an extraordinary space for a celebration. My aim is to develop a wedding concept that thoughtfully incorporates the art and architecture of the location while respecting the museum's requirements. This experience can be particularly valuable when approaching institutions with individual requests. Sometimes, the most interesting possibilities only emerge through direct conversations with the museum itself.
The following museums and cultural venues offer a wide range of possibilities for wedding ceremonies, receptions and celebrations. From historic picture galleries and contemporary art museums to extraordinary sculpture gardens, there are many different settings to discover.
For each location, I explore what makes it special, which parts of a wedding can take place there and the types of celebrations I would personally recommend. As venue policies and availability may change, the exact possibilities must always be confirmed individually with the respective museum.
Situated directly on the shores of Lake Wannsee, the former summer residence of painter Max Liebermann combines art history with one of Berlin's most beautiful waterfront settings. The historic artist's villa, its reconstructed garden, flower terrace and private jetty create a distinctive atmosphere.
Today, the Liebermann Villa is a museum that also opens its doors for private celebrations and wedding receptions. Civil wedding ceremonies cannot be held at the Liebermann Villa. However, the ground floor of the villa, the front garden, lakeside garden and terrace can be hired exclusively for a wedding dinner or reception. Outdoor events can accommodate up to 100 guests, while the capacity of the interior rooms depends on the individual event concept. The garden is particularly special, having inspired numerous paintings by Max Liebermann himself. For smaller gatherings, the historic jetty and its tea pavilion can also be hired separately. Up to 20 guests can enjoy this beautiful lakeside setting for a maximum of two hours. The villa and gardens are available for evening events outside the museum's regular opening hours. During summer, celebrations can begin from 7 pm, while winter events may start from 6 pm. Musical entertainment is permitted by arrangement until 10 pm. The museum's own Café Max provides catering, although external caterers may also be considered upon request. A private guided tour exploring Max Liebermann's life and work, or an additional visit to the exhibition, can also be incorporated into the evening.
Costs and Booking
The hire fee for the villa and gardens is €3,500 plus VAT and additional staffing costs. The jetty and tea pavilion can be hired separately for €600 plus VAT for up to two hours. Catering and other services are charged separately.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Liebermann Villa
I particularly recommend the Liebermann Villa for an elegant welcome dinner on the evening before the wedding or an exclusive reception and dinner following a civil or religious ceremony elsewhere. One beautiful possibility would be to begin with an intimate champagne reception on the jetty overlooking Lake Wannsee, followed by dinner inside the villa. The museum is also an interesting choice for couples who would like to celebrate their civil wedding with a special evening among close family and friends. However, the time restrictions are important to consider. As events can only begin in the evening and musical entertainment must finish by 10 pm, the villa is less suitable for a traditional wedding celebration with dancing late into the night. Its particular charm lies in elegant dinners, meaningful conversations and the beautiful relationship between art, gardens and the waters of Lake Wannsee.
Best Suited For: Exclusive welcome dinners, smaller wedding parties and elegant receptions following a ceremony at another location. Less suitable for couples wishing to host their ceremony, dinner and a late-night wedding party at a single venue.
The Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf offers couples the opportunity to celebrate their civil wedding ceremony in an extraordinary museum setting.
The TEEKANNE Belvedere is a light-filled space overlooking the Ehrenhof, where contemporary architecture meets the distinctive atmosphere of an art museum. It provides an elegant setting for couples seeking an intimate civil ceremony away from traditional registry office venues. Civil wedding ceremonies take place from May to October on two Fridays each month. Three ceremony times are offered on each date: 10 am, 11 am and 12 noon. In addition to the couple, up to 30 guests, two witnesses and one photographer may attend.
The fee for a wedding ceremony at the Kunstpalast is €850, of which €700 covers the venue hire. Reservations are made through the Düsseldorf Registry Office and can be arranged up to six months in advance. Certain restrictions apply to protect the museum and its architecture. Additional floral decorations are not permitted, with the exception of the bridal bouquet. A flower arrangement is already provided on the ceremony table. Confetti, scattering flower petals and open flames are also prohibited.
A champagne reception can be arranged in the museum's restaurant afterwards, but not in the Ehrenhof. The Kunstpalast is particularly interesting for couples looking for a civil wedding ceremony in a cultural setting, where the architecture of the museum itself becomes an essential element of the wedding design.
The Städel Museum in Frankfurt is one of Germany's most important art museums and offers an exceptionally prestigious setting for an exclusive wedding celebration. On its website, the museum presents its event spaces primarily under the category of corporate events. However, private celebrations and weddings are possible in principle. As weddings are not part of its regularly advertised offering, requests are considered individually. Couples dreaming of a wedding at the Städel should therefore contact the museum well in advance.
The Metzler Hall on the ground floor is particularly impressive and offers an elegant setting for a wedding dinner with a larger number of guests. The spacious room is situated within the museum and provides direct access to the Städel Garden. The adjoining outdoor areas offer additional possibilities for a reception or symbolic outdoor ceremony, subject to the museum's approval.
For smaller receptions, or potentially a wedding ceremony, the historic Founders' Hall may also be an option. From here, guests can access the Städel Roof, which offers beautiful views over the River Main and Frankfurt's skyline. Particularly in summer, the rooftop terrace provides a remarkable setting for an intimate reception. Whether a wedding ceremony can take place in the Founders' Hall, the garden or even one of the exhibition galleries must be discussed individually with the museum.
The use of museum and exhibition spaces is subject to specific organisational and timing requirements, particularly outside regular opening hours. Even the arrival of the guests can become part of the wedding experience. The monumental entrance staircase, historic museum façade and beautifully illuminated building in the evening give the celebration the atmosphere of an elegant gala. For couples who love art and architecture, the Städel is undoubtedly one of Germany's most extraordinary potential wedding venues.
Costs and Booking
Exclusive events are arranged through individual sponsorship agreements with the museum. As such an event involves a substantial financial commitment, the Städel is particularly suitable for couples with a generous wedding budget. The sponsorship contribution and additional conditions depend on the proposed event concept and must be discussed directly with the museum.
Best Suited For: Couples with a substantial wedding budget who dream of an exclusive celebration in a major art museum and particularly appreciate architecture, fine art and an elegant, prestigious atmosphere.
The Museum Reinhard Ernst in Wiesbaden is an extraordinary wedding venue for couples who love contemporary architecture and abstract art. Opened in 2024, the museum was designed by Japanese architect and Pritzker Prize winner Fumihiko Maki and is distinguished by its clean, sculptural architectural language. Its striking white exterior has also earned it the affectionate nickname “Sugar Cube”.
Inside, the museum is dedicated to abstract art created after 1945, with a particular focus on American, European and Japanese painting. Its collection includes works associated with Abstract Expressionism, Art Informel and the Japanese Gutai movement.
A Wedding Ceremony in Front of Tony Cragg's Sculpture Pair
What makes a wedding at the Museum Reinhard Ernst particularly special is the ceremony setting. On the first floor, couples can exchange their vows directly in front of Pair, a monumental bronze sculpture by British artist Tony Cragg. The expansive sculpture becomes the artistic centrepiece of the ceremony. The approach to the space also offers the opportunity for an exceptionally long bridal entrance. Up to 60 guests can be seated in front of the sculpture. Ceremonies take place outside the museum's regular opening hours, allowing the wedding party exclusive use of the designated area. A ceremony in front of Pair is not possible while the museum is open to the public.
Three Wedding Packages for Different Celebrations
The museum offers three wedding packages. With Kunst & Küsse (“Art & Kisses”), couples can book an evening ceremony followed by a reception. The first-floor spaces are available on six evenings a week, excluding Wednesdays, from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The area in front of the large windows, overlooking the historic buildings of Wilhelmstraße, is particularly beautiful.
The Liebe ist süß (“Love Is Sweet”) package combines the ceremony in front of the sculpture with a reception at the ground-floor bar. Petit fours and a wedding cake from the traditional Café Blum provide a celebratory conclusion. This option can be booked on weekend mornings before the museum opens or on weekdays from 6:30 pm.
Couples wishing to combine their ceremony with a larger wedding dinner can choose the Gesamtkunstwerk – wunschlos glücklich (“Total Work of Art – Everything You Could Wish For”) package.
Wedding Dinner in the Maki Forum
With the most comprehensive wedding package, the ceremony and reception are followed by dinner in the Maki Forum on the ground floor. This elegant event space accommodates up to 100 guests and can be styled to suit an individual wedding concept. Unlike the two smaller wedding packages, couples are free to choose their own caterer for the dinner. What I find particularly appealing is the opportunity to incorporate different areas of the museum into the wedding day: from the ceremony in front of Pair to a reception surrounded by art and architecture, followed by a festive dinner in the Maki Forum.
Art as Part of the Wedding Experience
An exclusive guided museum tour can be arranged for the wedding party upon request. This allows couples to enrich their celebration with a shared cultural experience. Live musical accompaniment is also possible, including vocals, violin or saxophone. Larger ensembles, such as a full band or orchestra, are not permitted in the ceremony area. For conservation reasons, confetti, rice and flower petals may not be scattered inside the museum. The exhibition galleries also remain closed during private wedding ceremonies.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Museum Reinhard Ernst
What I find especially extraordinary about this museum is the opportunity to hold a wedding ceremony directly in front of an important work of contemporary art. Tony Cragg's sculpture Pair is not simply a backdrop; it shapes the entire character of the ceremony. For smaller wedding parties, an intimate ceremony followed by a reception is a wonderful option. Couples wishing to spend their entire wedding day at the museum can combine the ceremony with a dinner in the Maki Forum. The Museum Reinhard Ernst is therefore a particularly interesting choice for couples dreaming of an art-inspired wedding that brings together contemporary architecture, abstract art and a personalised celebration.
Costs and Booking
Prices for the three wedding packages are available individually upon request. Ceremonies and receptions are generally scheduled for three hours. An extension may be possible by prior arrangement and may involve additional charges.
In Gotha, couples can combine a civil wedding ceremony within historic castle architecture with the extraordinary atmosphere of an art museum. Friedenstein Castle, one of Europe's most important early Baroque palace complexes, offers couples the opportunity to exchange their vows in a former ducal antechamber. Civil wedding ceremonies take place from May to October on two Saturdays each month. Dates are arranged through the Gotha Registry Office. An especially remarkable highlight is located just a short walk away: the Ducal Museum Gotha (Herzogliches Museum Gotha).
The museum is home to the famous Gotha Lovers, a painting dating from around 1480 and considered one of the earliest independent double portraits in German painting. It depicts a couple in an intimate pose and is regarded as an important example of late medieval representations of love. For couples with a passion for art, arranging a wedding portrait session at the Ducal Museum before or after the ceremony could be a wonderful possibility. The historic galleries and significant artworks provide an extraordinary setting for wedding photography. Professional photography must be registered with and approved by the museum in advance.
Couples wishing to host not only their ceremony but also their wedding dinner or reception within the castle grounds can enquire about hiring suitable event spaces. Friedenstein Castle offers historic rooms and distinctive event venues, including the Ekhof Theatre. Which spaces are available for private wedding celebrations must be clarified individually with the castle administration. Gotha therefore offers an interesting combination of a civil wedding ceremony, art history and the possibility of celebrating further parts of the wedding day within a remarkable historic ensemble.
The Old Masters Picture Gallery (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister) in Dresden is, in my opinion, one of the most impressive places for an art-inspired wedding in Germany. Here, one of Europe's most important collections of paintings meets the extraordinary architecture of Dresden's Zwinger Palace.
The museum is located in the Semper Building, which completes the famous Baroque Zwinger complex on the side facing Theaterplatz. Even the arrival is impressive: the historic façades, expansive courtyards and grand architecture create an extraordinary setting for a wedding day. Inside, the gallery houses masterpieces of European painting from the 15th to the 18th century. Among its most famous works are Raphael's Sistine Madonna, Vermeer's Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window and paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and other great masters of art history.
A Symbolic Wedding Ceremony Among Masterpieces – Even in Front of Raphael's Sistine Madonna
What makes the Old Masters Picture Gallery so special is the possibility of holding a symbolic wedding ceremony directly within its exhibition galleries. Rather than taking place in a separate event space, the ceremony can unfold surrounded by significant works of art. One particularly extraordinary possibility is a ceremony in the Sistine Hall, directly in front of Raphael's world-famous painting The Sistine Madonna, created in 1512–1513.
This masterpiece of the Italian High Renaissance depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, accompanied by Saints Sixtus and Barbara. The two small cherubs at the bottom of the painting are particularly famous and have become among the most recognisable images in art history.
The monumental depiction of the Madonna, the historic architecture of the gallery and the immediate presence of one of Europe's most significant paintings create a remarkable setting for exchanging wedding vows. The art itself becomes the central design element, meaning very little additional decoration is needed. Ceremonies within the exhibition galleries are possible by individual arrangement outside regular museum opening hours. The availability of specific galleries depends on the museum's requirements and circumstances.
One unusual detail is that fresh-cut flowers are permitted in the exhibition galleries. However, for conservation reasons, the vases must remain completely free of water. This means floral arrangements and their longevity need to be planned particularly carefully. For me, the possibility of exchanging vows in front of the Sistine Madonna is one of the most fascinating forms of a museum wedding, as a world-famous original artwork becomes the centrepiece of the ceremony.
Champagne Reception and Wedding Dinner at Café Algarotti
Following the ceremony, the celebration can continue within the museum itself. Café Algarotti, situated close to the exhibition galleries, offers an attractive setting for a champagne reception followed by a wedding dinner. What makes this arrangement particularly appealing is the connection between the spaces. Guests first experience the ceremony surrounded by masterpieces and then move directly to the museum's dining area. There is no need to transfer to another venue. Depending on the number of guests and the desired schedule, this allows for a cohesive wedding concept in which the ceremony and subsequent dinner are closely connected. The specific use of the café and the available catering arrangements are agreed individually.
Wedding Photography at Dresden's Zwinger Palace
Another major advantage of this location is the extraordinary range of possibilities for wedding photography. Dresden's Zwinger is one of Germany's most significant Baroque architectural landmarks. Its galleries, pavilions, staircases and expansive outdoor spaces offer numerous architectural perspectives for elegant and timeless wedding photographs. The Semper Building itself adds another impressive setting with its grand museum architecture. Photographs within the exhibition galleries can also be a wonderful addition, provided the necessary permissions have been obtained. The combination of Baroque architecture outdoors and masterpieces of European painting inside offers exceptional possibilities for developing an artistically curated wedding concept.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Old Masters Picture Gallery
For me, the Old Masters Picture Gallery is one of the most extraordinary places to celebrate a symbolic wedding ceremony genuinely surrounded by significant works of art. I am particularly impressed by the grandeur of the entire ensemble, from Dresden's Zwinger Palace and the architecture of the Semper Building to the historic exhibition galleries. Art and architecture shape the experience of the entire wedding day.
With the possibility of combining a ceremony in the galleries with a subsequent reception or dinner at Café Algarotti, the Old Masters Picture Gallery is particularly suitable for couples who wish to create an exclusive, art-inspired wedding in one location.
Costs and Booking
Venue hire conditions for weddings are arranged individually with the museum or its responsible events management team. Important considerations include the requested exhibition galleries, event times, number of guests and additional services such as security and museum attendants.
The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is one of the most extraordinary wedding venues for couples dreaming of a contemporary, art-inspired celebration. The architecture of the New Staatsgalerie, with its distinctive forms, open spaces and sculptural elements, offers particularly impressive possibilities for creating a personalised wedding ceremony and reception.
An Outdoor Wedding Ceremony in the Rotunda
One of the most remarkable features is the Rotunda, the circular courtyard of the New Staatsgalerie. Surrounded by architecture and sculptures, it provides an extraordinary setting for an outdoor symbolic wedding ceremony during the summer months. Guests can be seated in a semicircle or circular arrangement around the couple, creating an intimate atmosphere even with a larger wedding party. The long staircase leading down into the Rotunda also offers a dramatic entrance for the couple. Following the ceremony, a champagne reception could take place on the upper terrace, also outdoors and overlooking the museum's distinctive architecture.
Wedding Dinner in the Large Event Hall or Metzler Hall
Several spaces are available for a wedding dinner. The large event hall accommodates up to 450 people in theatre-style seating, providing ample space for larger wedding parties and elaborate design concepts. For a seated dinner, I would personally recommend a wedding party of at least 100 guests so that the proportions of the room can be used effectively and the space does not feel too expansive. As the hall has no windows, a carefully considered lighting and decoration concept is particularly important.
For smaller, more intimate celebrations, Metzler Hall is an interesting alternative. This understated room has windows and is located directly beside the exhibition galleries. For a wedding dinner at one long communal table, I would recommend a group of up to approximately 40 guests. This figure is my own planning estimate and not an officially confirmed room capacity.
The Column Hall and Apse Hall – Ceremony and Dinner in a Historic Setting
Another extraordinary possibility is the Column Hall and Apse Hall (Säulen- und Apsidensaal). Unlike the contemporary architecture of the New Staatsgalerie, this space is characterised by its historic atmosphere and impressive columns. What makes it particularly appealing is the layout of the room. The apse-like area at the back resembles a small chapel and provides an atmospheric setting for a symbolic wedding ceremony. In the front section, a long wedding table could be arranged between the columns for a festive dinner. This would allow the ceremony and dinner to take place within one connected space, with the historic architecture itself becoming an essential element of the wedding design.
Wedding Photography and Ceremonies Among the Artworks
The Staatsgalerie's exhibition galleries can also be incorporated into the wedding experience. With prior enquiry and the appropriate permission, bridal portrait sessions within the exhibitions are possible. The artworks and distinctive museum architecture provide an extraordinary setting for wedding photography. Couples who dream of a symbolic ceremony directly among the artworks can also enquire about this possibility individually.
Whether a ceremony can take place within an exhibition, and under which conditions, depends on the museum's approval and conservation requirements. The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart therefore offers a wide variety of possibilities for a wedding: from a summer ceremony outdoors to a contemporary wedding dinner, a celebration surrounded by historic architecture or a special experience within the exhibition galleries.
Important to Know: The museum's individual venue conditions must be considered when planning a wedding. Any restrictions caused by construction work should also be clarified well in advance. Work is currently taking place on the exterior façade of the Column Hall and Apse Hall, with completion scheduled for 2027 according to the latest available plans.
The Kunsthalle Mannheim offers extraordinary possibilities for couples wishing to celebrate their wedding in an art museum. What I find particularly appealing is the opportunity to combine different spaces for a symbolic wedding ceremony, reception, wedding dinner and subsequent party.
An Outdoor Wedding Ceremony on the Friends' Terrace
My personal recommendation for a ceremony at the Kunsthalle Mannheim is the Friends' Terrace (Terrasse der Freunde). Set within the museum's architecture, it provides a distinctive setting for an outdoor wedding ceremony. One major advantage is that, according to information provided to me personally by the museum's representative, the terrace can also be requested for a ceremony during regular museum opening hours. The area can be separated from the exhibition galleries, allowing the ceremony to take place without significantly interfering with the museum's daily operations. Naturally, the exact arrangements must be discussed and approved individually.
Wedding Dinner in the Auditorium or Atrium
Two spaces are particularly interesting for a wedding dinner. The Auditorium has windows, allowing natural daylight to enter the room and creating a welcoming atmosphere for a festive dinner. At the same time, curtains can be used to separate the space from the public areas. Catering is permitted here, and the room can also be hired during regular museum opening hours.
An architecturally impressive alternative is the Kunsthalle's Atrium. With capacity for up to 240 guests for a seated dinner, it is also suitable for large wedding parties. However, because it serves as the museum's central entrance area, the space does not necessarily feel oversized when used for a smaller celebration. It is therefore also possible to create a more intimate dinner setting in which the architecture itself becomes an essential part of the wedding concept. The Atrium is available for private events exclusively outside regular museum opening hours.
Wedding Reception Followed by a Party
Another advantage of the Kunsthalle Mannheim is the possibility of combining different areas for the various stages of the celebration. Following dinner in the Auditorium, for example, the wedding party could move to the museum café for dancing and the evening celebration. The café is located just a short walk from the Auditorium. Whether this combination is possible, and how late the celebration may continue, must be agreed individually during the event planning process.
An Art Studio for Younger Wedding Guests
The Kunsthalle also offers an interesting possibility for weddings with children. The art studio is located on the same level as the Friends' Terrace and could be used for a separate children's programme. While the adults attend the ceremony or reception, a supervised creative activity could be organised for the younger guests.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Kunsthalle Mannheim
For a wedding at the Kunsthalle Mannheim, I would particularly consider combining a symbolic ceremony on the Friends' Terrace with dinner in the Auditorium or Atrium, followed by an evening celebration in the museum café. The Kunsthalle Mannheim is therefore a versatile venue for couples wishing to combine contemporary museum architecture and art with an individually designed wedding celebration.
Museum Art.Plus in Donaueschingen is a particularly charming wedding venue for couples who dream of a ceremony in an artistic setting. Even arriving at the museum is an experience. The neoclassical building is situated directly beside the Brigach River, at the entrance to the palace gardens and overlooking the small classical temple known as the Donautempelchen. The path along the water and through the green surroundings creates an idyllic introduction to the wedding day. Donaueschingen is also famous for the source of the River Danube, located within the palace gardens. The beautifully designed spring basin with its sculptural ensemble is an interesting attraction for guests wishing to explore the town before or after the ceremony.
Civil or Symbolic Wedding Ceremony in the Hall of Mirrors
The centrepiece of the museum is its historic Hall of Mirrors (Spiegelsaal). With high ceilings, magnificent chandeliers, decorative stucco, gilded details and historic mirrors, it provides an elegant and romantic setting for a wedding ceremony. The 165-square-metre hall has a ceiling height of 7.8 metres and accommodates up to 80 guests, depending on the seating arrangement. Both civil and symbolic wedding ceremonies are possible here. For a legally recognised civil ceremony, arrangements must be coordinated with the Donaueschingen Registry Office. After the ceremony, a small champagne reception could take place in the elegant foyer or on the square in front of the museum. The exact possibilities and conditions are agreed individually with the museum.
Contemporary Art and Extraordinary Wedding Photography
One of the particular attractions of Museum Art.Plus is the interplay between historic and contemporary architecture. The neoclassical building, dating from 1841, has been extensively restored and complemented by a contemporary extension. While the historic section impresses with its grand rooms, the modern museum areas offer a completely different atmosphere. The exhibition galleries present contemporary art, creating an interesting contrast between historic details, modern architecture and current artistic positions. For wedding photography, the museum offers a variety of settings, from the Hall of Mirrors and the restored vaulted cellar to the contemporary extension and the square outside. A guided tour of the current exhibitions could also be a wonderful addition to the wedding day, offering guests a more personal encounter with the art. Both photography arrangements and private tours should be discussed with the museum in advance.
Wedding Dinner and Celebration at the Alte Hofbibliothek
Museum Art.Plus is particularly suitable for a wedding ceremony followed by a reception. A large wedding dinner or party is not included in its regular wedding offering. For couples wishing to spend their entire wedding day in Donaueschingen, I therefore recommend combining the museum with the nearby Alte Hofbibliothek. This historic building offers a variety of event spaces, a restaurant area and a bar with a dance floor, providing numerous possibilities for a wedding dinner and subsequent celebration. The Alte Hofbibliothek is within walking distance of the museum, allowing guests to move comfortably from the ceremony to the next venue.
It is precisely this combination that makes Donaueschingen so appealing for art-loving couples: a romantic ceremony in the historic Hall of Mirrors of a contemporary art museum, followed by a festive dinner and party in another characterful building.
The Erich Hauser Art Foundation (Kunststiftung Erich Hauser) in Rottweil is not a traditional museum, but an extraordinary cultural destination where sculpture, architecture and nature come together. For couples dreaming of a contemporary, art-inspired wedding, the expansive grounds provide an impressive setting, particularly for a summer celebration outdoors.
An Art Destination with a History
German sculptor Erich Hauser (1930–2004) is considered one of the most important steel sculptors of post-war Germany. He became known for his abstract, often monumental stainless-steel sculptures, characterised by geometric forms, sharp edges and reflective surfaces. His works can still be found in numerous public spaces today. Hauser participated in documenta in Kassel several times and was awarded the Grand Prize at the São Paulo Biennial in 1969. In 1996, he established the Erich Hauser Art Foundation on the site of his former home and studio in Rottweil. Today, visitors encounter not only his artworks but also the distinctive relationship between art, architecture and landscape.
A Symbolic Wedding Ceremony in the Sculpture Park
For me, the centrepiece of this location is its expansive sculpture park. Surrounded by green spaces and monumental stainless-steel sculptures, couples can create an extraordinary symbolic wedding ceremony. Some of the sculptures stand at considerable distances from one another, allowing the entire landscape to become part of the ceremony. I am particularly drawn to one sculpture whose shape personally reminds me of a contemporary wedding arch. Rather than installing a traditional floral arch, the sculpture itself could become the artistic focal point of the ceremony. Guests could also be positioned to experience the artworks and surrounding landscape throughout the exchange of vows. This is precisely why I would recommend the foundation particularly for weddings during the summer months. For me, the unique character of this location is best experienced outdoors, surrounded by the sculptures.
An Intimate Wedding Dinner in the Black House
For a smaller wedding party, the conference room in the Black House (Schwarzes Haus) is an excellent option. The light-filled, 84-square-metre room features a beautiful long wooden table that seats up to 24 guests in a boardroom-style arrangement. It provides a wonderful setting for a personal wedding dinner gathered around one communal table. The adjoining terrace is particularly appealing and can also be used in good weather. Following the ceremony, guests could enjoy a champagne reception outdoors before gathering around the long table for dinner. The combination of contemporary interiors, wood, natural daylight and views of the surroundings creates an interesting contrast with the monumental steel sculptures in the park.
Larger Wedding Celebrations in the Workshop Hall
For larger weddings, the Workshop Hall (Werkstatthalle) is available. The 600-square-metre building was designed in 1988 by Rottweil architect Hans Lünz and accommodates events with up to 300 guests. The hall has a distinctive character, with high ceilings, expansive windows, an industrial floor and the atmosphere of an artist's working environment. The history of the site as a production space for monumental steel sculptures is particularly tangible here. This openness makes the Workshop Hall especially interesting for individual wedding concepts. Whether long communal tables, round dining tables or a spacious layout with separate areas for dinner and dancing, the hall offers considerable creative flexibility. The adjoining outdoor area can also be incorporated into the wedding concept, perhaps for a reception or part of the celebration under the open sky.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Erich Hauser Art Foundation
The Erich Hauser Art Foundation is, in my opinion, one of the most exciting locations for an art-inspired summer wedding in Baden-Württemberg. I particularly recommend a symbolic ceremony among the monumental sculptures, followed by dinner in the Black House for a smaller wedding party or in the Workshop Hall for a larger celebration. What makes this location so special is that the art is much more than a backdrop. The sculptures, architecture and natural surroundings define the entire setting and can become the starting point for a truly individual wedding concept.
Costs and Booking
Hire fees for the sculpture park, conference room and Workshop Hall are provided individually upon request. Couples are generally free to choose their own caterer. The specific use of the outdoor areas and the arrangements for the wedding ceremony must be agreed with the foundation.
The Bavarian National Museum (Bayerisches Nationalmuseum) in Munich is one of Europe's most important museums of art and cultural history. Its monumental building on Prinzregentenstraße is distinguished by historic architecture and an extraordinary collection of European art and cultural heritage. For weddings, the museum offers several prestigious spaces suitable for receptions and formal celebrations. I am particularly interested in the Mars and Venus Hall, whose architecture and exhibited artworks could provide an extraordinary setting for a symbolic wedding ceremony.
A Symbolic Wedding Ceremony in the Mars and Venus Hall
My first choice for a wedding at the Bavarian National Museum would be the neo-Gothic Mars and Venus Hall (Mars-Venus-Saal). At the centre of this 280-square-metre room stands the monumental sculpture group of Mars and Venus by Hubert Gerhard. The combination of historic architecture and this impressive artwork creates a distinctive atmosphere for a symbolic wedding ceremony. The hall is officially available for events, concerts and receptions. One significant advantage is that the Mars and Venus Hall can also be hired during regular museum opening hours. This offers interesting possibilities when planning the schedule of the wedding day. In good weather, the adjoining Cannon Courtyard (Kanonenhof) could also be incorporated into the celebration, for example for a champagne reception following the ceremony.
Wedding Dinner and Celebration at Restaurant MUSEUM
For the remainder of the wedding day, I would recommend moving to Café and Restaurant MUSEUM, located directly beside the Bavarian National Museum. This would allow couples to combine a symbolic ceremony in the Mars and Venus Hall with a wedding dinner and subsequent celebration at the restaurant. The exact possibilities for a private wedding party, the number of guests and whether a later party is permitted would need to be discussed directly with the restaurant. I consider this combination particularly practical because it creates a clear separation between the ceremony and the celebration. While the Mars and Venus Hall serves as an extraordinary ceremony setting, the restaurant provides a suitable environment for dinner and socialising. In principle, it may also be possible to incorporate additional museum spaces into the wedding day. A dinner in the Mars and Venus Hall itself would, however, require a separate enquiry. As the room would need to be rearranged for each part of the celebration, combining the ceremony, dinner and party within a single hall would involve more complex event logistics.
Additional Event Spaces Within the Museum
In addition to the Mars and Venus Hall, the spacious museum foyer and its adjoining garden are available for hire. High stucco ceilings, large doorways, a historic marble floor and distinctive designer lighting characterise this 250-square-metre space. The foyer accommodates up to 100 guests for a seated dinner or approximately 150 to 200 guests for a standing reception. The staircase can also be included in the hire arrangement. For a larger wedding, the foyer could therefore be an interesting addition to the Mars and Venus Hall, perhaps for the reception or wedding dinner. It is important to note that the use of these additional museum spaces must take place outside regular opening hours. The Mars and Venus Hall itself accommodates approximately 180 to 200 guests for a standing reception. However, this capacity cannot automatically be applied to a ceremony with theatre-style seating or a seated dinner.
My Insider Tip: Wedding Portraits on the Historic Staircase
One of the highlights of the Bavarian National Museum, in my opinion, is its impressive staircase. With its grand architecture, historic details and beautiful perspectives created by the different flights of stairs, it provides an extraordinary setting for elegant, almost editorial-style wedding portraits. My personal tip is to make sure you allow sufficient time for photographs in this area. Whether professional wedding photography is permitted here, and under which conditions, should be clarified with the museum in advance.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Bavarian National Museum
I find the Bavarian National Museum particularly interesting for couples who dream of celebrating their wedding in a historic museum and wish to consciously incorporate the artworks into their ceremony. I would choose the Mars and Venus Hall for a symbolic wedding ceremony, followed by a reception in the Cannon Courtyard, weather permitting. For the wedding dinner and later celebration, the neighbouring Restaurant MUSEUM would be my preferred option. This creates a wedding concept in which art and architecture define the ceremony, while dinner and the subsequent celebration take place in a space specifically suited to hospitality.
Costs and Booking
Hire fees are available individually from the Bavarian National Museum. The use of the Cannon Courtyard, additional museum spaces, seating arrangements and the specific possibilities for a symbolic wedding ceremony should all be clarified in advance.
The Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See is, in my opinion, one of the most extraordinary locations for a civil wedding ceremony in a museum. Situated high above Lake Kochel, it combines significant 20th-century art with contemporary architecture and an impressive Alpine landscape. The museum is dedicated to the work of Expressionist painter Franz Marc and his fellow artists associated with the Blue Rider movement (Der Blaue Reiter). Alongside works by Marc, the collection includes paintings by Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter and other important artists of Classical Modernism. The architecture is particularly impressive. The contemporary extension opens towards the landscape through expansive glass façades. Thanks to its hillside location, the museum offers sweeping views across Lake Kochel towards the Herzogstand mountain range. It is precisely this connection between art, architecture and nature that makes the location so appealing for a wedding.
Civil Wedding Ceremony in the Panoramic Room
One of the special features of the Franz Marc Museum is that legally recognised civil wedding ceremonies can take place here. In cooperation with the Kochel am See Registry Office, couples can exchange their vows in the so-called Panoramic Room (Aussichtsraum). The room is located directly beside the exhibition galleries and is accessed through the museum. This means the wedding experience begins on the way to the ceremony, as the couple and their guests move through the architecture and art collection. The Panoramic Room itself is relatively small and is therefore particularly suitable for an intimate ceremony with close family and friends. Its large window offers an extraordinary panoramic view of Lake Kochel and the surrounding mountains. Elaborate decoration is hardly necessary, as the landscape already provides an impressive backdrop for the ceremony. The exact number of permitted guests should be confirmed directly with the Registry Office.
Wedding Dinner at Café Franz am See
Following the ceremony, the museum's Café Franz am See offers an attractive setting for a reception or wedding meal. The café is located in the historic part of the museum and features a beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking the museum park and Lake Kochel. Particularly during the summer months, this creates a wonderful connection between the interior and the surrounding natural landscape. I can easily imagine combining a civil ceremony in the Panoramic Room with a champagne reception on the terrace and an intimate wedding dinner in the café. Another possibility would be to celebrate a smaller ceremony at the museum before moving to a different venue in the region. This would allow couples to use the museum as a special setting for exchanging their vows, while hosting their later dinner or party elsewhere around Lake Kochel.
Why I Particularly Recommend the Museum for Summer Weddings
The Franz Marc Museum is impressive throughout the year. For a wedding, however, I would particularly recommend the summer months. The museum's special character is not defined by its artworks or architecture alone, but also by its immediate connection to nature. The surrounding Franz Marc Park, mature trees, terraces and views of the lake all contribute significantly to the atmosphere. The surroundings also offer a variety of possibilities for wedding photography: contemporary architecture, green parkland and the expansive landscape of Lake Kochel. Photography within the exhibition galleries must be arranged with the museum in advance.
Important Planning Consideration: Access and Parking
One aspect I would pay particular attention to when planning a wedding at the Franz Marc Museum is the arrival of the guests. The museum is situated on a hillside above Lake Kochel. The path from the public car parks to the museum leads through the park and includes a relatively steep uphill section. The museum does not have its own regular visitor parking facilities. The designated public parking areas are located on Mittenwalder Straße. Depending on the parking space, the walk to the museum takes approximately five to ten minutes. Especially during the summer months, when the Lake Kochel region attracts many visitors, finding parking can require additional time. For this reason, I would recommend arranging an organised shuttle service or shared guest transfer. This would make arrival more comfortable, particularly for older guests and those with limited mobility. Guests with health-related mobility restrictions can also be dropped off directly at the museum entrance.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Franz Marc Museum
The Franz Marc Museum is a particularly beautiful choice for couples dreaming of a small civil wedding ceremony in a museum while also sharing a love of nature. The intimate Panoramic Room, the views of Lake Kochel and the significant art collection create an extraordinary setting for exchanging wedding vows. Combined with Café Franz am See and its terrace, the museum offers the opportunity to create a cohesive celebration for a smaller wedding party. Couples wishing to host a larger celebration can combine their ceremony at the museum with a subsequent dinner at another venue in the region.
Costs and Booking
Dates for civil wedding ceremonies are coordinated through the Kochel am See Registry Office. Hire fees and additional conditions must be requested individually from the museum. A separate arrangement with Café Franz am See is required for a wedding dinner or reception.
The Buchheim Museum in Bernried on Lake Starnberg is, in my opinion, a particularly beautiful choice for a summer museum wedding. Here, art and extraordinary architecture come together with expansive parkland and the immediate proximity of the water. Opened in 2001, the museum houses an important collection of Expressionist art, including works by artists associated with the Brücke movement. Designed by architect Günter Behnisch, the building opens towards the surrounding landscape through large glass façades, creating a distinctive connection between the museum's interiors and nature.
A Symbolic Wedding Ceremony Overlooking Lake Starnberg
Perhaps the museum's most extraordinary architectural feature is the long jetty extending from the building out over Lake Starnberg. It almost appears to float above the water, offering beautiful views of the lake and surrounding landscape. My personal idea for a summer wedding would be a symbolic ceremony directly on this jetty. The clean architectural lines, the water and the openness of the landscape would create an extraordinary setting for exchanging vows. The jetty itself could become the focal point of the ceremony, without the need for elaborate decoration. The expansive museum park also offers interesting possibilities for an outdoor ceremony surrounded by greenery. Sculptures, mature trees, meadows and the lakeshore provide a variety of settings for a personalised wedding concept.
Reception or Wedding Dinner in the Event Hall
For a reception or wedding dinner, the museum offers an event hall overlooking the lake. The room accommodates up to 120 guests for a standing reception and up to 80 guests for a seated dinner. With theatre-style seating, the capacity increases to 130 people. The hall features parquet flooring, modern event technology and direct access to the museum park and a sun terrace. This makes the museum suitable not only for a symbolic ceremony followed by a champagne reception, but also for a complete wedding concept including dinner. I particularly like the possibility of beginning the celebration outdoors by the lake before moving into the event hall for dinner.
Café BUFFI – Dining Directly by the Lake
Another option is Café BUFFI, located within the museum and offering beautiful views across Lake Starnberg. The restaurant also provides catering for private events and offers individually tailored menus and buffet concepts. Depending on the desired schedule, a champagne reception, a shared meal or smaller culinary experiences can be incorporated into the wedding celebration. One particularly appealing possibility is a reception on the jetty, which the café specifically lists as an event option. The terraces and park can also be included in the celebration by arrangement.
A Wedding with Several Distinct Settings
I can imagine several different wedding concepts at the Buchheim Museum. One possibility would be a symbolic ceremony outdoors, followed by a champagne reception overlooking the lake and dinner in the event hall. Equally appealing would be a smaller wedding where the museum is used exclusively for the ceremony and reception. Afterwards, guests could move to another venue on Lake Starnberg for dinner and an evening party. An exclusive guided museum tour could also enrich the wedding day, giving guests the opportunity to discover the Expressionist collection and current exhibitions.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Buchheim Museum
I would particularly recommend the Buchheim Museum to couples dreaming of a summer wedding that combines art and nature. Unlike many museums in urban settings, the landscape plays just as important a role here as the artworks themselves. The lake, sculpture park, architecture and various outdoor spaces make it possible to develop a wedding concept that unfolds across several settings. For me, a symbolic ceremony by the water followed by a reception would be an extraordinary way to incorporate this artistic destination into the wedding day.
Important Planning Consideration
The Buchheim Museum has been undergoing an architectural expansion, including new exhibition and workshop spaces as well as renovations to the café. The overall reopening was announced for autumn 2026. When planning a wedding, it is therefore important to confirm which areas are fully available and whether any remaining construction work could affect the appearance of the venue or the event arrangements.
Costs and Booking
Hire fees and conditions are provided individually upon request. The use of the jetty for a ceremony, as well as the park and indoor spaces, must be agreed with the museum.
A museum wedding does not necessarily have to take place in the centre of a major city. The mSE Kunsthalle in Unterammergau demonstrates how extraordinary the combination of contemporary art, modern architecture and an Alpine landscape can be. Situated in the Ammertal valley and surrounded by the Ammergau Alps, this cultural destination offers a distinctive atmosphere for couples dreaming of a wedding away from the bustle of the city.
An Extraordinary Ensemble of Art, Architecture and Nature
The mSE Kunsthalle forms part of a cohesive architectural ensemble consisting of three buildings: the art gallery, the LARTOR boutique hotel and Restaurant Hieronymus. With their timber façades and generous roof overhangs, the buildings reinterpret traditional elements of regional architecture in a contemporary way. As a result, the ensemble blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape while maintaining a clear, modern architectural identity. The Kunsthalle is dedicated to contemporary art and presents paintings, photography and sculpture, among other artistic disciplines. Its sculpture garden also creates a beautiful connection between art and nature.
Symbolic Wedding Ceremony and Dinner in the Kunsthalle
For weddings, the upper floor of the mSE Kunsthalle is particularly interesting. The spacious exhibition rooms, with their gallery-like character, can be hired for private events and provide an extraordinary setting for a symbolic wedding ceremony, reception or festive dinner. Thanks to flexible room layouts and modular seating arrangements, the space can be adapted to different event formats and guest numbers. A dance floor can also be incorporated into the wedding concept. According to the venue's event information, the upper floor can accommodate up to 120 guests, although the actual capacity depends on the planned use and seating arrangement. Outdoor areas may also be incorporated into the wedding concept upon request. Particularly in summer, this creates an opportunity to connect the Kunsthalle with the surrounding mountain landscape.
Wedding Celebration at Restaurant Hieronymus
A particular advantage is the neighbouring Restaurant Hieronymus. Different parts of the wedding day can take place here, including a reception, wedding dinner or relaxed evening gathering. The restaurant combines contemporary, high-quality cuisine with the distinctive atmosphere of the Ammertal valley. Various spaces, including the sun terrace and traditional beer garden, offer additional possibilities for the celebration. I particularly like the idea of organising the wedding day across several settings: a symbolic ceremony in the Kunsthalle, followed by a reception overlooking the mountains and a shared dinner at the restaurant. This allows guests to experience different aspects of the location without the need for lengthy transfers.
Accommodation at the LARTOR Boutique Hotel
The third building within the ensemble is the LARTOR boutique hotel. With twelve individually designed rooms, it provides accommodation directly at the wedding venue. Large panoramic windows offer views of the surrounding natural landscape and mountains. The rooms combine contemporary design with natural materials, each drawing inspiration from themes in European art and literary history. For the couple and part of their wedding party, this creates the opportunity to combine the celebration with a shared stay in the Ammergau Alps.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the mSE Kunsthalle
What makes this location particularly special to me is the combination of art and peaceful rural seclusion. While many museums are situated in urban centres, the mSE Kunsthalle conveys a sense of tranquillity, openness and exclusivity. The three buildings form a harmonious ensemble in which different stages of the wedding day can be seamlessly connected. At the same time, the surrounding landscape provides an extraordinary setting that creates an interesting contrast with the contemporary art and architecture. I would particularly recommend this location to couples dreaming of an art-inspired wedding with the character of a destination wedding: a ceremony in the museum, an exceptional dinner, accommodation on site and enough time to enjoy the celebration together in a remarkable setting.
Costs and Booking
Hire fees and individual conditions are available upon request. The exact use of the Kunsthalle, restaurant and outdoor areas, as well as potential accommodation allocations, should be discussed with the LARTOR team well in advance.
The Belvedere in Vienna is one of Austria's most important Baroque palace complexes and houses one of the country's most renowned art collections, including Gustav Klimt's world-famous painting The Kiss. The combination of magnificent architecture, historic state rooms and extensive gardens makes the museum an extraordinary wedding venue. What makes the Belvedere particularly interesting is that it offers not only civil and religious wedding ceremonies, but also receptions, formal dinners and larger wedding celebrations. The Upper and Lower Belvedere provide very different atmospheres and possibilities for designing the wedding day.
Civil Wedding Ceremony at the Lower Belvedere
The Lower Belvedere was originally the residential palace of Prince Eugene of Savoy. Today, its historic state rooms provide a particularly prestigious setting for a civil wedding ceremony. Couples can choose between the Marble Gallery, with seating for up to 100 guests, the Grotesque Hall, with up to 80 seats, and the Gold Cabinet, which accommodates smaller wedding parties of up to 24 people. The rooms differ considerably in their design. While the Marble Gallery impresses with its spacious architecture, the Gold Cabinet offers a particularly intimate and opulent atmosphere with its gilded wall decorations. For a small civil wedding, I would personally find the Gold Cabinet especially appealing. The room's elaborate interior already creates an extraordinary setting for the ceremony, meaning very little additional decoration is needed.
A Summer Wedding in the Privy Garden
Another special option is the Privy Garden (Kammergarten) at the Lower Belvedere. Prince Eugene's former private garden is located directly beside the historic state rooms and is characterised by its Baroque garden design. During the summer months, civil wedding ceremonies for up to 100 guests can take place here. For me, the Privy Garden is one of the most appealing settings for a wedding at the Belvedere. The combination of historic palace architecture, symmetrical gardens and an outdoor ceremony creates an extraordinary atmosphere. I particularly love the idea of holding the ceremony in the garden before moving into the historic interiors for a reception or wedding dinner. This allows guests to experience different parts of the palace without having to change venues.
Civil and Religious Wedding Ceremonies at the Upper Belvedere
The Upper Belvedere also offers several possibilities for a wedding. The Octagon is available throughout the year for civil wedding ceremonies. This historic room has 48 seats and a maximum capacity of 65 people. Couples wishing to have a religious ceremony in a particularly intimate setting can also use the Baroque palace chapel. With seating for up to 30 guests, it is especially suitable for smaller wedding parties. The Upper Belvedere provides an extraordinary setting for couples planning a classic, elegant wedding with historic character. Its architecture and important art collection already define the atmosphere of the entire venue.
Wedding Reception and Dinner at the Belvedere
Following the ceremony, guests can gather for an Agape, a celebratory reception with drinks and small bites. The Belvedere offers various arrangements depending on the number of guests and the desired catering options. For a larger wedding dinner, the Marble Hall at the Upper Belvedere is particularly interesting. This monumental state room accommodates up to 200 guests and is one of the most prestigious event spaces within the palace complex. Its historical significance is especially remarkable: the Austrian State Treaty was signed here in 1955. The Baroque architecture and elaborate ceiling paintings create an extraordinary setting for a formal dinner. Afterwards, guests can move to the Sala Terrena and enjoy the remainder of the evening accompanied by music. The Lower Belvedere also offers a variety of options for a wedding dinner. The Marble Gallery accommodates up to 120 guests for a seated dinner, while the Grotesque Hall seats up to 60 people. Additional state rooms and the Privy Garden can also be incorporated into the event concept.
Art and Wedding Photography
Beyond its event spaces, the Belvedere offers extraordinary opportunities for wedding photography. The historic staircases, magnificent salons, Baroque garden avenues and façades of the two palaces provide numerous perspectives for elegant wedding portraits. I find this particularly interesting for couples who want their wedding to have a strong connection to art and architecture. The spaces require very little additional styling because the architecture itself already plays an essential role in the visual composition. Professional photo shoots inside the palace rooms must be registered with and approved by the museum in advance.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Belvedere
What makes the Belvedere particularly interesting to me is the variety of wedding possibilities within a single palace complex. For a smaller, especially art-inspired wedding, I would recommend a civil ceremony in the Gold Cabinet at the Lower Belvedere. Its extraordinary interior creates an intimate atmosphere that is very different from a conventional registry office. For a larger summer wedding, however, the Privy Garden would be my first choice. A ceremony in the garden, followed by a reception and dinner in the historic state rooms, creates a particularly cohesive wedding concept. Couples dreaming of a large, prestigious wedding celebration will find an impressive setting for a formal dinner in the Marble Hall at the Upper Belvedere. What I find especially appealing is the opportunity to design not just a single ceremony, but an entire wedding day surrounded by art, Baroque architecture and historic gardens.
Costs and Booking
The current venue hire fee for a civil wedding ceremony at the Lower Belvedere is €2,500 for 60 minutes, including the ceremony table and a floral arrangement. Each additional hour costs €1,500. At the Upper Belvedere, hire fees for a civil ceremony in the Octagon or a religious ceremony in the palace chapel start at €1,700. The Belvedere offers various Agape packages for a reception afterwards. Hire fees for larger wedding celebrations and dinners are provided individually upon request. All prices and conditions should be confirmed directly with the museum before booking.
The Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna is one of Europe's most important art museums and provides an exceptionally prestigious setting for a wedding. Its monumental building on Vienna's Ringstrasse impresses with 19th-century architecture, magnificent staircases, marble columns and a spectacular domed hall. The art collection is equally extraordinary, with major works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, Vermeer and Caravaggio. The museum therefore combines historic architecture with one of Europe's most significant art collections. What makes this venue particularly interesting is that it offers more than civil wedding ceremonies. A reception, private museum tours and a formal wedding dinner can also become part of the wedding day.
Civil Wedding Ceremony in the Bassano Hall
For a civil wedding ceremony, the Kunsthistorisches Museum offers the historic Bassano Hall on the second floor. The room is named after the Venetian Bassano family of painters, whose works were exhibited here for many years. Its historic paintings, wooden panelling and decorative floors give the hall a particularly elegant atmosphere. The Bassano Hall is also suitable for larger wedding parties. The museum specifies a capacity of up to 180 people in theatre-style seating. The exact number of guests permitted for a civil ceremony must be agreed with the events team. One advantage is that the hall can also be hired during regular museum opening hours. This allows for more flexibility when scheduling the ceremony, without having to book the entire museum exclusively. For couples wishing to have a classic civil wedding ceremony in an extraordinary cultural setting, the Bassano Hall is therefore an interesting option.
An Intimate Ceremony in the Friends of the Museum Lounge
For smaller wedding parties, the Friends of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Lounge is another option. Also located on the second floor, the lounge offers a very different atmosphere from the spacious Bassano Hall. Particularly beautiful are the views into the magnificent domed hall, across Maria-Theresien-Platz and towards the Natural History Museum opposite. The lounge is especially suitable for an intimate ceremony with a limited number of guests. The museum currently specifies a capacity of up to 50 people for a standing reception and 30 people for banquet seating. The maximum number of guests for a civil ceremony should be confirmed individually. I find this room particularly appealing for a small wedding because it combines a personal atmosphere with the museum's monumental architecture.
Wedding Reception and Private Museum Tour
Following the civil ceremony, the wedding day can continue with a reception and a shared art experience. The museum has several prestigious spaces suitable for receptions. The foyer is particularly impressive, with views of the grand staircase and the domed hall above. The area outside the Bassano Hall can also be used for smaller receptions. An extraordinary addition is the possibility of arranging a private tour of the art collection. Guests can discover selected masterpieces or explore a particular art-historical theme. The museum also offers individually tailored guided tours. I find this especially appealing for art-loving couples. Rather than using the artworks merely as a backdrop for the wedding, the collection itself becomes part of the shared experience.
Wedding Dinner in the Museum's Magnificent Event Spaces
In addition to ceremonies and receptions, the Kunsthistorisches Museum offers the possibility of hosting formal dinners. Several prestigious spaces are available for larger evening events. The domed hall is particularly impressive, with its monumental architecture providing an extraordinary setting for a wedding dinner. Dining in a space like this is a very different experience from a traditional wedding celebration in a hotel or restaurant. The architecture itself defines the atmosphere and allows for an especially elegant design concept. For a wedding at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, I would therefore deliberately work with the existing architecture. Understated table styling, carefully selected floral elements and a considered lighting concept can complement the historic interiors without competing with them. Exclusive use of the museum's prestigious event spaces is generally possible outside regular opening hours. The specific rooms, capacities and catering arrangements must be agreed individually. The museum works with selected partner companies for catering and event technology.
Wedding Photography on the Monumental Staircase
For me, one of the most extraordinary areas of the Kunsthistorisches Museum is its monumental staircase. The sweeping flights of stairs, marble columns, elaborate wall paintings and views into the domed hall create an impressive setting for elegant wedding portraits. I am particularly fascinated by the architectural perspectives available here. The symmetry, different levels and historic details make it possible to create wedding photographs with an almost editorial visual language. For a wedding at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, I would therefore make sure to allow sufficient time for portraits on the staircase. Professional photography must be arranged with and approved by the museum in advance.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Kunsthistorisches Museum
For me, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna is one of the most interesting wedding venues for couples dreaming of a celebration surrounded by significant art and monumental architecture. For a larger civil ceremony, I would consider the Bassano Hall. For a smaller wedding party, I find the lounge overlooking the domed hall particularly appealing. My personal recommendation would be to combine the ceremony with a champagne reception and a private museum tour. This gives guests the opportunity to engage with the art collection and discover more about this extraordinary venue. For couples dreaming of a larger, particularly prestigious wedding celebration, a formal dinner in the museum's event spaces could also be an interesting option. Another highlight for me would be wedding portraits on the monumental staircase. It is precisely the combination of important art, historic architecture and elegant wedding design that makes the Kunsthistorisches Museum such an extraordinary venue.
Costs and Booking
Hire fees are provided individually by the Kunsthistorisches Museum and depend primarily on the selected rooms, number of guests and scope of the event. Additional costs may include museum staff, insurance, cleaning and other services. Catering and event technology are organised separately through the museum's partner companies. The desired hire times should also be agreed well in advance. While the Bassano Hall and lounge can generally be hired during regular museum opening hours, exclusive evening events in the museum's prestigious spaces take place outside opening hours.
The Ernst Fuchs Museum in Vienna is one of the most extraordinary wedding venues for couples who love art, historic architecture and opulent interiors. The museum is housed in the former villa of architect Otto Wagner in Vienna's Hütteldorf district. Built in 1888, the building combines late 19th-century architecture with the imaginative artistic world of Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs. Fuchs purchased the villa in 1972 and transformed it into a unique total work of art. Today, the museum houses his paintings, sculptures and elaborately designed interiors. Particularly impressive is the combination of historic salons, Art Nouveau elements, richly coloured artworks and extraordinary architectural details.
Civil Wedding Ceremony in the Grand Salon or Adolph Böhm Hall
Two different rooms are available for a civil wedding ceremony. The Grand Salon forms the prestigious centre of the villa. Large-scale paintings by Ernst Fuchs, elaborate wall decorations and an imposing Murano glass chandelier define this extraordinary space. With a capacity of up to 80 people, the salon is suitable for both a ceremony and a subsequent formal dinner. The Adolph Böhm Hall, Otto Wagner's former studio, offers a completely different atmosphere. Its monumental Art Nouveau windows, created around 1900 from designs by Adolph Böhm, are particularly impressive. The coloured glass and elaborate mosaic floor make the room an extraordinary setting for a civil wedding ceremony. Both rooms can also be hired for ceremonies during regular museum opening hours.
Wedding Reception and Private Museum Tour
Following the ceremony, the museum offers the opportunity to host a champagne reception in the villa's magnificent rooms. Depending on the event concept, additional spaces such as the loggia or historic dining room can be incorporated alongside the Grand Salon and Adolph Böhm Hall. I find the possibility of combining the reception with a private tour of the villa particularly interesting. This allows guests not only to discover the extraordinary interiors, but also to learn more about Otto Wagner, Ernst Fuchs and the history of this remarkable artistic destination.
Wedding Dinner and Celebration at the Villa
Couples wishing to spend their entire wedding day at the museum can hire the villa after regular opening hours for a formal wedding dinner and subsequent celebration. The Grand Salon accommodates a gala dinner for up to 80 guests. Adjoining rooms, including the Fireplace Salon and Music Salon, can also be incorporated into the event concept. What I find particularly appealing is the possibility of using different parts of the villa for different stages of the wedding day: a civil ceremony in the Adolph Böhm Hall, followed by a reception with a private museum tour and, later, a formal dinner in the Grand Salon. The villa is available for evening events until midnight at the latest. It is therefore not intended for weddings with lively parties continuing into the early hours of the morning.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Ernst Fuchs Museum
For me, the Ernst Fuchs Museum is a particularly interesting venue for couples who want a wedding with an expressive, artistic atmosphere. Unlike many modern art museums, its character is not defined by minimalist architecture and expansive white spaces, but by intense colours, ornamental details and an extraordinary abundance of artworks. My personal recommendation would be a civil ceremony in the Adolph Böhm Hall. The large Art Nouveau windows create an architecturally impressive setting that requires very little additional decoration. Afterwards, I would combine a champagne reception with a private tour of the villa and arrange the wedding dinner in the Grand Salon. For couples dreaming of a wedding with the atmosphere of a historic salon, the Otto Wagner Villa offers an extraordinary alternative to traditional palace or hotel weddings.
Costs and Booking
The museum publishes the following hire fees: during regular opening hours, €300 per hour for the Grand Salon or Adolph Böhm Hall; outside opening hours, €690 per hour for the entire villa. Prices for catering, additional services and individual wedding packages should be requested directly from the museum. Evening events can continue until midnight at the latest.
For me, the Musée Rodin is one of the most extraordinary wedding venues in Paris for art-loving couples. The museum is housed in the Hôtel Biron, an elegant 18th-century mansion surrounded by approximately three hectares of sculpture gardens in the heart of the 7th arrondissement. Here, French architecture, historic garden design and some of the most significant sculptures in art history come together. Works by Auguste Rodin, including The Thinker and The Kiss, give the venue an unmistakable atmosphere. What I find particularly appealing is the connection between the interiors of the Hôtel Biron and the expansive gardens. While the historic mansion provides an intimate and elegant setting for smaller wedding parties, the sculpture garden offers entirely different possibilities for larger, elaborately designed celebrations. The Musée Rodin is therefore much more than an extraordinary backdrop for wedding photography. It is a place where art and architecture can become an essential part of the entire wedding concept.
Wedding Dinner at the Hôtel Biron
The Hôtel Biron forms the historic heart of the museum. Built in the early 18th century, the mansion was once home to several artists, including Auguste Rodin himself, who also worked here. Today, it houses a significant part of his collection. For smaller wedding parties, the historic entrance hall can be hired for an exclusive dinner with up to 50 guests. What makes this setting particularly extraordinary is its proximity to Rodin's sculpture The Kiss. This famous work explores love, passion and human intimacy, themes that take on a special significance in the context of a wedding. A formal dinner in these surroundings is very different from a traditional wedding celebration in a Parisian hotel or restaurant. The artworks are not simply a decorative backdrop; they define the atmosphere of the entire evening. The Hôtel Biron can also accommodate up to 120 guests for a cocktail reception. I find this option particularly interesting for a smaller, art-inspired wedding. An intentionally understated design concept, with carefully selected floral arrangements, elegant tableware and a restrained colour palette, could beautifully complement the historic architecture and sculptures.
Wedding Celebration in the Sculpture Garden
For larger wedding parties, the expansive sculpture garden of the Musée Rodin offers extraordinary possibilities. Covering approximately three hectares, the gardens combine historic avenues, manicured lawns, rose beds and shaded pathways with sculptures by Auguste Rodin. Among the most famous works displayed outdoors is The Thinker, one of the most significant sculptures in the history of modern art. Particularly interesting for weddings is the approximately 600-square-metre terrace directly in front of the Hôtel Biron. A temporary event structure can be installed here to create a setting for a formal dinner or larger wedding celebration, with the historic façade of the mansion providing an impressive backdrop. Depending on the event concept and the areas used, the gardens can accommodate events for up to 1,500 people. For a wedding, however, I would not consider this maximum capacity the benchmark. What appeals to me much more is the opportunity to create an exclusive, individually designed atmosphere within the expansive gardens. An elegant reception among the sculptures, followed by dinner in front of the historic façade of the Hôtel Biron, would be a particularly harmonious combination. The size of the gardens also offers interesting possibilities for designing the guest experience, with different pathways and distinct areas for various parts of the celebration.
Art as Part of the Wedding Experience
What makes the Musée Rodin particularly special to me is the opportunity to incorporate the art consciously into the wedding day rather than treating it simply as a backdrop. The museum offers private guided tours of its collection, which can be integrated into the event concept. During a reception, for example, guests could discover selected works by Auguste Rodin and learn more about the creation of his sculptures. For a wedding with an international guest list, such a tour could be a particularly interesting addition. It offers a shared cultural experience while creating a more personal connection to the venue. The collection also provides exciting possibilities for the wedding design itself. Rodin's exploration of movement, the human body and relationships could, for example, inspire a sculptural floral concept or a contemporary, art-inspired tablescape. I would be careful, however, to ensure that the design complements the artworks rather than competing with them.
Wedding Photography Among Sculptures and Architecture
The Musée Rodin offers extraordinary opportunities for wedding photography. The sculpture garden in particular provides a variety of perspectives, with historic façades, symmetrical gardens, romantic pathways and Rodin's sculptures creating distinctive settings for elegant wedding portraits. What fascinates me most is the connection between nature and art. While the architecture of the Hôtel Biron conveys classic Parisian elegance, the sculptures introduce an additional artistic dimension to the photographs. I find this contrast especially interesting for contemporary wedding photography. Minimalist, modern bridal fashion can create an extraordinary visual dialogue with the historic sculptures. The possibilities for professional photography and any additional permissions required should be discussed with the museum in advance.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Musée Rodin
For me, the Musée Rodin is one of the most beautiful places to create a wedding in Paris with a direct connection to art. For a smaller wedding party, I would particularly recommend an exclusive dinner at the Hôtel Biron. The historic interiors and proximity to Rodin's sculpture The Kiss create a setting that is both elegant and extraordinary from an art-historical perspective. For a larger wedding, however, the sculpture garden would be my first choice. I would envision a reception among the sculptures, giving guests the opportunity to discover the gardens and selected artworks. Afterwards, a formal dinner could take place on the terrace in front of the Hôtel Biron. I would particularly love a design concept inspired by Rodin's sculptural language, incorporating organic floral arrangements, carefully selected materials and an understated, timeless elegance. What makes the Musée Rodin so special to me is that the art is not confined to the museum's interiors but also shapes the outdoor spaces. This makes it possible to create a wedding day in which architecture, gardens and sculpture form one cohesive atmosphere.
Costs and Booking
Hire fees for an exclusive event at the Hôtel Biron start at €14,500, excluding French VAT. A seated dinner is possible for up to 50 guests, while a cocktail reception can accommodate up to 120 people. Hire fees for an event in the sculpture garden start at €39,500, excluding French VAT. Events can generally take place from 7:30 pm onwards. On Mondays, when the museum is closed to regular visitors, the venue can also be hired for the entire day. Catering, event technology, staff, floral arrangements and other services are not included in the stated hire fees. Couples are generally free to choose their own suppliers, provided they comply with the museum's requirements. Private guided tours and other individual programme elements can also be requested as part of the event planning process. The prices, capacities and conditions stated reflect the information available at the time of writing and should be confirmed directly with the museum before booking.
For me Caumont – Centre d’Art in Aix-en-Provence is one of the most extraordinary art-inspired wedding venues in the South of France. Located in the heart of the historic Mazarin district, the art centre combines the elegant architecture of an 18th-century French mansion with temporary art exhibitions and beautiful formal gardens. The listed Hôtel de Caumont is just a few steps from the famous Cours Mirabeau. Even the arrival through the cobbled courtyard conveys the prestigious atmosphere of this historic property. Inside, guests discover elaborately decorated salons featuring ornate stucco, historic mirrors, chandeliers and decorative wall details. Unlike a traditional art museum with a permanent collection, the Centre d’Art regularly presents changing exhibitions featuring important artists. The venue therefore combines historic architecture with a vibrant exhibition programme.
A Symbolic Wedding Ceremony in the French Gardens
For a wedding, I find the extensive gardens particularly interesting. The Hôtel de Caumont has more than 1,000 square metres of private gardens designed in the French formal style. The symmetrical flowerbeds, fountains, terraces and historic façade create an extraordinary setting for an outdoor symbolic wedding ceremony. The art centre explicitly offers wedding ceremonies as part of its event programme. For me, a ceremony in the gardens would be a particularly beautiful way to bring together the architecture of the mansion and the atmosphere of Provence. The cobbled courtyard could also be incorporated into the wedding concept, for example as a setting for guests' arrival or a reception following the ceremony.
Wedding Dinner in the Historic Salons
Several interconnected historic salons are available for the wedding dinner. Particularly beautiful is the sequence of differently decorated rooms: the Salon des Putti, overlooking the courtyard and gardens; the Salon des Rinceaux, with its ornamental wall decorations; the Salon Chinois; and the Grande Galerie, with its large mirrors and crystal chandeliers. Together, these four interconnected salons accommodate up to 140 guests for a seated dinner. I find these spaces particularly appealing for a wedding with a classic, elegant design concept. The historic interiors already define the atmosphere, meaning an intentionally understated tablescape with selected floral elements may be all that is needed.
Wedding Dinner in the Gardens
Another option is an outdoor wedding dinner. According to the venue's event information, the upper garden accommodates up to 100 guests for a seated dinner. For a cocktail reception, this area can accommodate up to 250 people, provided it is not also being used for dinner. The lower garden is suitable for a reception with up to 125 guests, while the courtyard can host cocktail events for up to 200 people. These different outdoor areas offer many possibilities for creating a wedding day that unfolds across several settings: a symbolic ceremony in the gardens, followed by a champagne reception in the courtyard and a formal dinner on the terrace or in the historic salons.
Dinner and an Evening Party at One Venue
A particular advantage of Caumont – Centre d’Art is that it can accommodate not only ceremonies and dinners, but also a wedding party afterwards. The Grande Galerie can be used as a dance floor for up to 100 people, provided it is not already needed for dinner. This makes it possible to organise an entire wedding celebration within the historic property without guests having to move between different venues. Exclusive use of the event spaces for weddings is scheduled from 7:30 pm until 2:00 am. These evening hours should therefore be considered early when planning the ceremony and the overall wedding schedule.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at Caumont – Centre d’Art
For me, Caumont – Centre d’Art is a particularly beautiful choice for couples dreaming of an art-inspired wedding in the South of France who also appreciate the elegance of historic French architecture. The combination of an art centre, magnificent salons and French gardens creates an atmosphere that is very different from traditional wedding venues. As a wedding planner, I would particularly recommend May, June and September for this location. During these months, the Mediterranean climate of Provence is usually more comfortable, while the intense summer heat in July and August can become challenging, especially for an outdoor ceremony or dinner. A symbolic ceremony in the gardens, a reception in the courtyard and dinner in the historic salons or on the terrace would create a particularly harmonious wedding concept during these months.
Costs and Booking
Caumont – Centre d’Art accommodates weddings for approximately 40 to 140 guests. Hire fees are provided individually upon request. Catering, lighting and sound equipment must be organised separately, and the art centre works with a selection of approved suppliers.
The Segantini Museum in St. Moritz is one of the most extraordinary venues for an intimate wedding in Switzerland. In the museum's impressive domed hall, couples can exchange their vows directly in front of Giovanni Segantini's monumental Alpine triptych Life – Nature – Death (La vita – La natura – La morte). The three large-scale paintings, which explore life, nature and death, give the room a truly distinctive atmosphere. One special feature is that the domed hall can be hired exclusively for a wedding ceremony even during regular museum opening hours. This allows the ceremony to be planned without requiring the entire museum to close. Following the ceremony, the museum terrace offers a beautiful setting for a champagne reception overlooking St. Moritz. A separate venue is required for the wedding dinner and subsequent celebration. In St. Moritz, this creates the opportunity to design an extraordinary wedding weekend, combining a ceremony at the museum with a formal dinner at one of the region's exclusive hotels or restaurants.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Segantini Museum
What I find particularly appealing is the combination of significant art, the extraordinary architecture of the domed hall and the impressive Engadin mountain landscape. The museum is suitable for both a romantic winter wedding and an elegant summer wedding in St. Moritz. However, the museum's specific requirements must be considered when planning the celebration. In particular, floral arrangements, set-up and dismantling, and guest logistics are subject to conditions that should be discussed well in advance. Couples wishing to learn more about the possibilities and special features of this venue can find further information in my detailed blog article, Getting Married at the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz, including the available spaces, ceremony arrangements, costs and my recommendations for a wedding weekend in the Engadin.
Costs and Booking
The museum currently charges a flat fee of CHF 1,000 for exclusive use of the domed hall for the first hour. Each additional hour costs CHF 200. Additional services are charged separately. The maximum number of guests is 50, with seating for 40 people and standing room for ten. The Segantini Museum is therefore particularly suitable for smaller wedding parties wishing to celebrate a personal ceremony in an extraordinary artistic setting. Current conditions and available dates should be requested directly from the museum.
The Enea Tree Museum in Rapperswil-Jona, near Lake Zurich, is one of the most extraordinary wedding venues for couples who want to bring together art, architecture and nature. Unlike a traditional art museum, the focus here is not on paintings or exhibition galleries, but on trees that become living works of art. Internationally renowned landscape architect Enzo Enea opened the Tree Museum in 2010. The grounds showcase approximately 50 trees, some more than 100 years old, which were saved from being felled and transplanted to this location. The collection is complemented by contemporary sculptures that enter into a dialogue with the carefully designed landscape. The museum forms part of a site covering approximately 75,000 square metres, where landscape architecture, art and modern design come together in a remarkable way.
A Symbolic Wedding Ceremony Beneath Ancient Trees
For a wedding, the extraordinary garden landscape is particularly appealing. Beautiful outdoor symbolic ceremonies can be created among the mature trees, carefully designed pathways, water features and sculptures. The Tree Museum explicitly offers the possibility of holding wedding ceremonies on its grounds. The trees themselves can serve as a form of natural architecture, creating an impressive setting for exchanging vows. I find this venue particularly appealing for a summer wedding. The different garden spaces offer numerous possibilities for designing an individual ceremony and subsequent reception without the need for elaborate floral decorations.
Wedding Dinner in the Orangery
For a smaller wedding party, the Orangery at the Tree Museum is an excellent option. The approximately 115-square-metre glass pavilion is inspired by the architecture of Victorian orangeries. Tall glass panels, a ceiling height of around seven metres and a large chandelier give the room an elegant character. The Orangery accommodates up to 60 guests for a banquet. What makes it particularly beautiful is the connection between the interior and the gardens: the generous glass façades allow the surrounding nature to remain part of the experience throughout dinner. For an intimate summer wedding, I can easily imagine a symbolic ceremony in the Tree Museum, followed by a reception in the gardens and a formal dinner in the Orangery.
Larger Weddings in the Showroom or on the Piazza
The grounds also offer a variety of possibilities for larger wedding parties. The modern Showroom features expansive glass façades and a terrace directly beside the pond. It accommodates up to 250 guests for a banquet. Its deliberately minimalist architecture creates an interesting contrast with the organic design of the parkland. Another option is the Piazza within the Tree Museum. This open event space can also be used for larger receptions or dinners and accommodates up to 250 guests for a banquet. A large covered terrace is also available, allowing different areas to be combined even in changeable weather.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Enea Tree Museum
What makes the Enea Tree Museum particularly interesting to me is the way it dissolves the boundaries between art, nature and architecture. The centuries-old trees are presented like sculptures, while the contemporary artworks and different buildings create an extraordinary overall experience. I would especially recommend this venue for a summer wedding, allowing guests to experience different parts of the gardens throughout the day: from a symbolic ceremony among the trees to an outdoor reception and dinner in the Orangery or modern Showroom.
Costs and Booking
Hire fees and individual conditions are provided upon request. Depending on the event format, the spaces can be booked separately or in combination.
The Kunsthaus Zürich is one of Switzerland's most important art museums and offers extraordinary possibilities for a wedding celebration in a cultural setting. Centrally located on Heimplatz, the museum brings together several architecturally distinct buildings. The historic Moser Building, later extensions and the new building designed by British architect David Chipperfield, which opened in 2021, form a diverse ensemble connecting art and architecture from different periods. The collection is equally extraordinary, ranging from Old Masters and Impressionism to Classical Modernism and contemporary art. The Kunsthaus is particularly well known for its extensive collection of works by Alberto Giacometti.
Formal Wedding Dinner in the Chipperfield Building
For a larger wedding party, the ballroom in the extension designed by David Chipperfield is particularly interesting. Covering 465 square metres, the space is characterised by its clean, contemporary architecture and offers considerable creative freedom for individual wedding concepts. It accommodates up to 360 guests for a banquet, making it suitable for large, prestigious wedding dinners. The minimalist design provides an ideal foundation for a modern wedding concept. I find the opportunity to work with sculptural floral arrangements, long communal tables and carefully selected materials particularly exciting, without having to compete with an already highly decorative architectural setting.
A Wedding in the Lecture Hall with the Tinguely Garden
Another option is the lecture hall in the historic Moser Building. This light-filled event space covers approximately 650 square metres and accommodates up to 200 guests for a banquet. The connection to the adjoining Tinguely Garden is particularly beautiful. Depending on the season and event schedule, the outdoor area could be used for a champagne reception. This makes it possible to create a wedding concept that combines a reception surrounded by greenery with dinner inside the museum.
An Intimate Wedding at Villa Tobler
For a smaller, particularly elegant wedding party, I would recommend Villa Tobler. This historic Art Nouveau villa is located between the Kunsthaus and Zurich's Old Town. Its Bel Étage, or principal floor, impresses with original Art Nouveau details, magnificent rooms and selected artworks from the Kunsthaus collection. The event space extends across three interconnected rooms and accommodates up to 60 guests for a banquet. I find the contrast with the modern museum buildings particularly appealing. While the Chipperfield Building creates a contemporary, minimalist atmosphere, Villa Tobler offers an entirely different kind of elegance. The terrace overlooking the garden can also be incorporated into the celebration. For an intimate wedding with a formal dinner in a historic setting, Villa Tobler would therefore be my personal recommendation within the Kunsthaus ensemble. Couples are generally free to choose their own caterer. Upon request, the Kunsthaus can recommend catering companies familiar with the venue.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the Kunsthaus Zürich
What makes the Kunsthaus Zürich particularly interesting to me is the variety of architectural atmospheres within a single museum ensemble. For a large, modern wedding, I would favour the ballroom in the Chipperfield Building. For a smaller wedding party seeking an elegant, historic setting, Villa Tobler would be my first choice. Another special possibility would be to combine the wedding celebration with a private guided tour of the art collection. This allows the museum to become more than an extraordinary event venue, making the art itself part of the wedding experience. The Kunsthaus advertises its spaces for private events and weddings. Whether symbolic wedding ceremonies are also possible, and in which rooms, should be clarified individually with the events team.
Costs and Booking
The Kunsthaus publishes the following daily hire fees: CHF 7,500 for the ballroom, CHF 4,000 for the lecture hall and CHF 6,000 for Villa Tobler, each including chairs. Additional services, such as catering, extra rooms and technical equipment, are arranged individually.
Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina is one of the most extraordinary wedding venues on Lake Como. This historic estate combines a magnificent villa, an important art collection and a botanical garden covering approximately 100,000 square metres. The terraces and gardens offer breathtaking views across Lake Como towards Bellagio. What I find particularly appealing is the combination of art, architecture and nature. Inside the villa are significant 19th-century artworks, including Antonio Canova's Cupid and Psyche and Francesco Hayez's Romeo and Juliet. At the same time, the extensive gardens, with their historic terraces, exotic plants and flowering camellias, provide an extraordinary setting for a wedding. Unlike many traditional wedding villas on Lake Como, the architecture is not the only attraction here. The art collection and botanical gardens add a cultural dimension to the estate that can be beautifully incorporated into an individual wedding concept.
Civil and Symbolic Wedding Ceremonies on the Terrazza delle Camelie
The Terrazza delle Camelie is available for wedding ceremonies. Located within the historic gardens, the terrace provides a particularly beautiful setting for exchanging vows overlooking Lake Como. Both legally recognised civil wedding ceremonies and symbolic ceremonies can take place here. The event space is reserved for 90 minutes, and the package includes admission to the museum and botanical gardens as well as basic seating for the ceremony. I find this option particularly appealing for a wedding on Lake Como. The terrace combines the romantic atmosphere of an Italian garden with the historic character of the estate. Elaborate decoration is hardly necessary, as the architecture, plants and lake views already create an extraordinary backdrop.
Wedding Dinner in the Botanical Gardens
In addition to wedding ceremonies, Villa Carlotta offers the possibility of hosting a formal wedding dinner in its gardens. For events with up to 80 guests, the gardens can be hired exclusively in the evening. Dinner is scheduled between 7 pm and 11 pm, allowing couples to celebrate surrounded by the historic gardens. I particularly love the idea of beginning the wedding day with a ceremony on the Terrazza delle Camelie, followed by an aperitif and a formal dinner in the gardens. An individually designed tablescape featuring carefully selected flowers, elegant tableware and a restrained colour palette could complement the natural beauty of the gardens without competing with it. Villa Carlotta works with its own catering partners for aperitifs and dinners. Other suppliers and the detailed event arrangements must comply with the museum's requirements.
Important Considerations When Planning Your Wedding
Weather planning is particularly important for a wedding at Villa Carlotta, as both the ceremony and dinner take place outdoors. For very small wedding parties of up to ten guests, a room inside the museum may be available as an alternative ceremony location in bad weather. However, this depends on availability. For ceremonies with eleven or more guests, a separate marquee structure must be arranged on the terrace. A suitable covered structure is also required if it rains during a garden dinner. These additional requirements should be included in the budget from the beginning. Especially for a destination wedding on Lake Como, a well-considered wet-weather plan is essential to ensure the celebration can take place regardless of the weather.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at Villa Carlotta
Villa Carlotta is particularly interesting to me for couples dreaming of a wedding on Lake Como who want to go beyond the traditional aesthetic of an Italian villa. The combination of important artworks, a historic estate and botanical gardens offers numerous possibilities for an art-inspired, individually designed wedding concept. For a smaller wedding, I would recommend an intimate ceremony on the Terrazza delle Camelie, followed by an aperitif overlooking the lake. The villa provides an extraordinary setting for an elopement or a wedding celebrated with only your closest family and friends. For a larger wedding party of up to 80 guests, I find the combination of a ceremony and subsequent garden dinner particularly appealing. This allows guests to experience the estate over several hours and enjoy the special atmosphere created by art, nature and Italian architecture.
Costs and Booking
For a civil wedding ceremony, the following venue hire fees apply in addition to the municipality's fees: up to 50 guests, €2,500 plus Italian VAT; 51 to 80 guests, €3,500 plus Italian VAT. For a symbolic ceremony, the basic fee is €2,000 plus VAT, with an additional €3,000 for up to 50 guests or €4,000 for 51 to 80 guests. A wedding dinner in the gardens can take place between 7 pm and 11 pm. The following hire fees apply for the 2026/2027 season: 2 to 10 guests, €8,000 plus VAT; 11 to 50 guests, €12,000 plus VAT; 51 to 80 guests, €18,000 plus VAT. Catering, floral arrangements, music, any applicable SIAE licensing fees and other external services are not included in these prices. Any marquee structure required as a wet-weather contingency must also be budgeted separately. The prices, capacities and conditions stated should be confirmed directly with Villa Carlotta before booking to ensure they are still current and available.
A museum wedding high in the mountains? The LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography on Kronplatz in South Tyrol demonstrates just how extraordinary the combination of art, contemporary architecture and spectacular natural scenery can be. The museum is situated at an altitude of 2,275 metres, directly on the summit of Kronplatz near Bruneck. From here, breathtaking panoramic views extend across the Dolomites and the surrounding mountains. Even the journey by cable car makes a visit a special experience. Opened in 2018, the museum explores the history and contemporary practice of mountain photography. Across four floors, visitors discover historic photographs, contemporary photography, artistic installations and different perspectives on mountain landscapes. What I find particularly fascinating is that the surrounding landscape is not only visible outside the museum but is repeatedly incorporated into the architecture and exhibitions themselves.
Civil and Symbolic Wedding Ceremonies on Kronplatz
One of the special features of the LUMEN Museum is the possibility of hosting both civil and symbolic wedding ceremonies. This makes the museum an extraordinary alternative to traditional wedding venues in South Tyrol. Rather than exchanging vows in a mountain hut or traditional hotel, couples can celebrate their ceremony in a place dedicated to the artistic representation and perception of mountains. For a ceremony, I can particularly imagine one of the contemporary event spaces overlooking the mountain panorama. The clean architectural lines and surrounding landscape create an impressive setting that requires very little additional decoration. The specific rooms available for each type of ceremony are agreed individually with the museum.
Wedding Dinner in the LUMEN Forum
The LUMEN Forum is available for weddings and private events. This event space covers approximately 170 square metres and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The museum specifies a maximum capacity of around 200 people, although the actual number of guests for a wedding dinner depends on the seating arrangement and room layout. Thanks to the expansive windows, the mountain panorama remains part of the celebration throughout the evening. For a wedding, I can particularly imagine a dinner at long communal tables, combining the room's contemporary architecture with carefully selected floral and sculptural elements.
Restaurant AlpiNN – Dining with Panoramic Mountain Views
Restaurant AlpiNN is located directly beside the museum and is known for its contemporary interpretation of South Tyrolean mountain cuisine. Its culinary concept, Cook the Mountain, was developed by acclaimed South Tyrolean chef Norbert Niederkofler and places particular emphasis on regional and seasonal produce. The restaurant's interior design is equally extraordinary. Created by designer Martino Gamper, it combines different materials, forms and colours with expansive panoramic windows. The restaurant normally offers approximately 80 seats. Individual catering concepts can be requested for weddings and larger private events. I find the possibility of connecting different stages of the wedding day particularly appealing: a ceremony in the museum, a reception overlooking the mountains and a formal dinner in the LUMEN Forum or Restaurant AlpiNN.
Art and Mountain Photography as Part of the Wedding Experience
A private guided tour of the museum could provide an additional experience for guests. LUMEN presents mountains from many different perspectives, ranging from the beginnings of Alpine photography and documentary work to contemporary artistic interpretations. One particularly well-known installation is Shutter, an oversized camera aperture that opens to reveal the surrounding mountain landscape. A shared museum tour could give guests an interesting introduction to the art while making the connection between the venue and its natural surroundings even more tangible.
Important Planning Consideration: Arrival and Cable Car Access
Logistics play a particularly important role when planning a wedding at the LUMEN Museum. The museum is located on the summit of Kronplatz and is normally accessible by cable car from Reischach, Olang and Furkelpass. Operating hours vary depending on the season. For a wedding involving an evening dinner or longer celebration, it is therefore essential to clarify arrival and departure arrangements, possible special cable car services and the transport of suppliers and equipment well in advance. Weather conditions must also be taken into account. At this altitude, conditions can change quickly.
My Recommendation for a Wedding at the LUMEN Museum
For me, the LUMEN Museum is one of the most extraordinary ways to combine a museum wedding with a destination wedding in the mountains. Particularly impressive is the contrast between the contemporary museum architecture, the artistic exploration of mountain landscapes and the actual panorama of the Dolomites. I would recommend this venue to couples who love art and design while also dreaming of a wedding surrounded by spectacular natural scenery. With the possibility of a civil or symbolic ceremony and the combination of the LUMEN Forum and Restaurant AlpiNN, it is possible to create a highly individual wedding concept.

The National Gallery on Trafalgar Square in London is one of the world's most important art museums. Its collection includes masterpieces of European painting from the 13th to the early 20th century, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Monet and Van Gogh. What makes this venue particularly extraordinary is the opportunity to celebrate a wedding surrounded by such an important art collection.
Various galleries are available for wedding receptions and dinners. The Barry Rooms are particularly impressive, with their domed ceiling, marble columns and paintings from the Italian, French and British collections. Room 32, one of the museum's largest galleries, featuring important works of Italian painting, and Room 34, with its collection of British art, can also be used for dinner. Wedding dinners for up to 300 guests are possible. The contemporary Annenberg Court provides a suitable setting for dancing and an evening party.
Events take place after regular museum opening hours. According to the museum's wedding brochure, set-up can begin from 6 pm, with guests usually arriving from 6:30 or 6:45 pm. Venue hire starts at £18,000 plus VAT and includes exclusive use of the agreed event spaces, an event manager, security staff and cleaning.
It is important to note that the National Gallery is not licensed to conduct legally recognised wedding ceremonies. A civil marriage must therefore take place at another venue. However, a symbolic ceremony or wedding blessing is possible.
As celebrations take place directly among valuable artworks, specific restrictions apply. Catering, floristry, lighting, entertainment and event production must be provided by suppliers from the museum's approved partner network. Open flames and candles are prohibited, as is confetti inside the building. Appropriate public liability insurance is also required.
Best Suited For
Couples dreaming of an exclusive wedding in London who wish to experience their wedding dinner surrounded by world-famous artworks. A particularly appealing option is to combine a ceremony at another London venue with a reception at the National Gallery and a formal dinner in its historic exhibition rooms.
Costs and Booking
The stated hire fees and conditions should be confirmed directly with the museum before booking to ensure they are still current and available.
Museum Van Loon is housed in a historic 17th-century canal house on Amsterdam's Keizersgracht. Its historic salons, garden and former coach house create a particularly special setting for a wedding. The museum has been an official wedding venue since 2012. Fittingly, the history of the house itself is also connected to a wedding: in 1884, Thora Egidius and Willem Hendrik van Loon moved into the property, which they had received as a wedding gift.
Wedding ceremonies for up to 80 guests are possible and can take place both during regular museum opening hours and after 5 pm. The current hire fee is €1,750 plus VAT for the first two hours, with each additional hour costing €750 plus VAT.
After the museum closes, a wedding dinner for up to 70 guests can also be arranged. Available spaces include the historic dining room overlooking the Keizersgracht and the Blue Salon. A walking dinner is another option. The museum provides tables, chairs, cloakroom facilities and catering infrastructure. Museum Van Loon works with three designated catering partners: Gewoon Eten & Meer, Hessing Events and Wendy Welvaars. Venue hire for a dinner starts at €3,500 plus VAT, excluding catering.
As the museum remains a historic house with a valuable collection, specific restrictions apply to the handling of artworks, styling and decoration, music and the scale of event production. These requirements should therefore be incorporated into the wedding design and organisational planning from the outset.
Best Suited For
Couples looking for an elegant, intimate wedding in the heart of Amsterdam who wish to combine historic architecture, art and dinner at one venue. Particularly interesting is the possibility of holding the ceremony at the museum during the day and using the house for dinner after regular opening hours.
Costs and Booking
The stated hire fees and conditions should be confirmed directly with the museum before booking to ensure they are still current and available.
There are numerous museums across Germany and Europe that allow weddings or individual parts of a wedding celebration. These include historic painting galleries, museums of modern and contemporary art, sculpture parks and private art institutions. Examples include the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Museum Reinhard Ernst in Wiesbaden, Museum Art.Plus in Donaueschingen and Caumont – Centre d’Art in Aix-en-Provence. The types of ceremonies and celebrations permitted vary from museum to museum. Not every cultural institution that hires out event spaces automatically allows weddings.
Yes, some museums allow symbolic wedding ceremonies directly within their exhibition galleries. One extraordinary example is the Old Masters Picture Gallery (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister) in Dresden, where ceremonies can take place among important artworks under certain conditions. However, ceremonies in exhibition spaces are often subject to specific requirements, including restrictions on flowers, decoration, lighting and photography. Such events are also frequently only possible outside regular museum opening hours.
For weddings with only a few guests, smaller museum rooms, historic salons and private art institutions can be particularly interesting. For example, the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See offers a panoramic room for civil wedding ceremonies. Museum Art.Plus in Donaueschingen also provides a special setting for smaller wedding parties with its historic Hall of Mirrors. The deciding factor is not simply the maximum room capacity, but whether the space is suitable for the desired number of guests and the planned wedding schedule.
Yes, some museums can accommodate the ceremony, reception, wedding dinner and subsequent celebration. One example is Caumont – Centre d’Art in Aix-en-Provence, which offers historic salons, gardens and event spaces for different parts of the wedding day. Other museums, however, only allow a ceremony or reception. In these cases, dinner or the evening party can take place at a nearby restaurant or another venue.
Exclusive use of an entire museum is relatively rare. More commonly, only selected rooms or outdoor areas are available for private hire. Some museums allow events during regular visitor opening hours, while others offer the use of certain exhibition galleries after closing time or on days when the museum is closed to the public. Whether partial or full exclusive use is possible must be discussed individually with the relevant cultural institution.
Yes, some museums have sculpture gardens, courtyards, terraces or extensive parkland that may be suitable for symbolic wedding ceremonies and receptions. Examples include the Enea Tree Museum in Switzerland, the Erich Hauser Art Foundation in Rottweil and Caumont – Centre d’Art in Aix-en-Provence. For these venues in particular, it is important to consider not only the season but also a suitable wet-weather alternative.
Potentially, yes. Not all museums publish every possibility for private use of their spaces. Some cultural institutions provide only general information about venue hire. Whether a symbolic ceremony, wedding dinner or special use of individual museum spaces is possible often becomes clear only after making a personal enquiry. However, an enquiry does not guarantee approval. Protecting the artworks and meeting the operational requirements of the museum always take priority.
Several factors play an important role when choosing a museum as a wedding venue: the art collection, architecture, desired number of guests, possibilities for the ceremony and dinner, as well as the location and accessibility. Whether the wedding can take place during regular opening hours or requires exclusive use also influences the choice. As a wedding planner specialising in art-inspired weddings, I help couples find a museum that not only captivates them aesthetically but also offers the right practical and organisational conditions for their wedding day.
